Piano / Sir András Schiff

András Schiff was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1953 and started piano lessons at the age of five with Elisabeth Vadász. Subsequently he continued his musical studies at the Ferenc Liszt Academy with Professor Pál Kadosa, Gy?rgy Kurtág and Ferenc Rados, and in London with George Malcolm.

Recitals and special cycles, including the major keyboard works of J.S. Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann and Bartók form an important part of his activities. Since 2004, he has performed complete cycles of the 32 Beethoven Piano Sonatas in 20 cities, which included the live recording of his cycle in the Zurich Tonhalle.

For his recording “Geistervariationen” with works by Robert Schumann (ECM), Andras Schiff received the International Classical Music Award 2012, in the category “Solo Instrumental Recording of the Year.”

András Schiff has worked with most of the major international orchestras and conductors, but nowadays he performs mainly as a conductor and soloist. In 1999 he created his own chamber orchestra, the Cappella Andrea Barca, which consists of international soloists, chamber musicians and friends. In addition to working annually with this Orchestra, he also works with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

Since childhood he has enjoyed playing chamber music and from 1989 until 1998 was Artistic Director of the internationally highly praised "Musiktage Mondsee" chamber music festival near Salzburg. In 1995, together with Heinz Holliger, he founded the "Ittinger Pfingstkonzerte" in Kartause Ittingen, Switzerland. In 1998 Mr Schiff started a similar series, entitled "Hommage to Palladio" at the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza.

András Schiff has been awarded numerous international prizes. In 2006 he became an Honorary Member of the Beethoven House in Bonn in recognition of his interpretations of Beethoven’s works; in 2012 he received the Golden Mozart-Medaille by the International Stiftung Mozarteum, and was made a Member of Honour of Vienna Konzerthaus; in July 2014 he was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Music honoris causa by the University of Leeds.

In the spring of 2011 Mr Schiff attracted attention because of his opposition to the alarming political development in Hungary and in view of the ensuing attacks on him from some Hungarian Nationalists, decided not to perform again in his home country.

In June 2014 he was bestowed a Knighthood for services to Music in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

NDR Radiophilharmonie

Excellent quality in an exceptional diversity of musical styles – the NDR Radiophilharmonie, based in Hannover, Germany, enjoys a reputation of being one of the world’s most flexible orchestras.

Whatever the concert programme demands, the NDR Radiophilharmonie becomes a first class symphony orchestra, a special ensemble for baroque music or one of the finest crossover orchestras there is.

Concertmaster Kathrin Rabus: “For me, it’s all about the diversity of the repertoire: it’s both a huge challenge and such a joy. The constant changes among all the musical genres allow us to keep things fresh. Thus we’re always excited about what is coming up next and of course that keeps the artistical quality at the highest possible level. It’s fantastic.”

Taking a look at the orchestra’s illustrious history, it becomes clear, that the unique combination of quality and diversity has a long tradition. Founded in 1950 as the orchestra of Hannover broadcasting, the roots of the NDR Radiophilharmonie go back to the 1920s when Hannover’s first radio station was launched. Due to the special requirements of radio broadcasting, right from the very early days on, diversity was crucial.

Thus, the list of leading artist whom the NDR Radiophilharmonie has collaborated with is as divers and impressive as the orchestra itself, ranging from stars like Anne-Sophie Mutter, Hélène Grimaud, Hilary Hahn, Philippe Jaroussky or Rudolf Buchbinder over sensational conductors like Gustavo Dudamel, Andris Nelsons, Kristjan J?rvi or Cornelius Meister to Jazz legends like Al Jarreau and Chet Baker – to mention just a few. New chiefconductor since the beginning of the season 2014/15 is Andrew Manze.

Also, the NDR Radiophilharmonie has strengthened its international profile with concerts in the whole of Europe as well as in Japan, China, South America and Abu Dhabi. Worth mentioning also are guest invitations to the International Bergen Festival, the Pisa Festival, the renowned Klubhaus concerts in Switzerland or London’s Royal Albert Hall.
