A wind of Czech (formerly Bohemian) nationalism blows open our 2018 Season: Prague-born Antonín Dvo?ák, in his emotional Cello Concerto, had interwoven his passionate love for Josefina Kounitzová (his childhood sweetheart and sister-in-law) and his endless desire to reignite the Bohemian blaze. Overwhelming homesickness also penetrated his Symphony No. 9, the second movement of which was arranged for a nostalgic song in multiple languages (“Goin’ Home”, for instance, has been renowned throughout China since the 1920s).

Will Humburg          Conductor

The internationally renowned German conductor Will Humburg serves as Music Director of the Darmstadt State Theatre and the first Guest Conductor at the Theater Bonn. He commenced his music studies under Horst Stein (conductor) and Christoph von Dohnanyi in his native Hamburg. After initial engagements in Bremen and Hagen, Humburg began his international career with guest performances at German and Italian opera houses and radio stations.

Humburg is best known for his rendition of Wagner. Highlights of his Wagnerian productions included DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN, DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NüRNBERG as well as TRISTAN UND ISOLDE, produced when he worked as Chief Conductor of the Münster Opera Theatre and Münster Symphony Orchestra.

Apart from standard classical repertoire, of particular interest is Will Humburg’s reputation as a leading interpreter of contemporary music. In 1988 he became the head of the “Laboratorio Lirico” festival for contemporary music theatre in Alessandria, Italy. Moreover, he also maintains a close artistic partnership with Azio Corgh, Italian opera composer and musicologist. So far, he has premiered four operas in total out of Corghi's most significant portfolio; spectacular exemplars of which included his successful debuts of the composer's DIVARA - WASSERUND BLUT and TAT’JANA, the latter having its world premiere at the Teatro alla Scala in 2000. Furthermore, Humburg’s repertoire also includes the central works of Ligeti, Penderecki, Zimmermann and Henze, etc.

His broad-ranging repertoire of over 110 musical works, and his dynamic interpretations, renowned for their stylistic authenticity, have made Will Humburg one of the most sought-after conductors for both concert and opera.

Isang Enders   Cello

Isang Enders has established himself as a leading artist in search of new concepts and works for the violoncello. Born into a German-Korean musician family in Frankfurt in 1988, Isang Enders began studying with Michael Sanderling at the age of twelve. His playing has since been influenced by his studies with Gustav Rivinius, Truls M?rk, and above all, by the mentoring of the American cellist Lynn Harrell.

At the age of twenty, Isang Enders was appointed principal cello of the Dresden Staatskapelle, making him the youngest section leader in Germany. During his four years with the orchestra, he also co-founded the Gohrisch “Shostakovich” Festival alongside Tobias Niederschlag.

Isang Enders has performed with London’s Philharmonia Orchestra, making his debut in the “Music of Today” Series at Southbank Centre and enjoyed collaborations with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra,Stavanger Symphony, Stuttgarter Philharmoniker under eminent conductors including Myung-Whun Chung, Fabien Gabel, Christoph Eschenbach, Pablo Heras-Casado, Eliahu Inbal, Zubin Mehta and Vasily Petrenko.

He has recently performed Unsuk Chin’s Cello Concerto in both Stavanger and Paris, and performed the Korean debut of Dutilleux’s Cello Concerto as well as the Shostakovich Cello Concerto with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.

As a dedicated chamber musician, he continues to work closely with the pianist Igor Levit, with whom he has toured extensively, as well as Kit Armstrong and Sunwook Kim. Isang Enders has strong relationships with international chamber music festivals such as Heidelberger Frühling, and the Marlboro Music Festival at the invitation of Kim Kashkashian.

Forthcoming recitals include performing at Beethovenfest Bonn, Kolner Philharmonie, Rheingau Musik Festival and Schubertiade with Igor Levit.

He opens the 17/18 Season on tour with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra in Seoul, and enjoys further collaborations with the München Symphoniker, Frankfurt Museumsorchester and Suzhou Symphony Orchestra with his debut at the S?o Paulo Symphony and Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestras performing Unsuk Chin’s Cello Concerto under Ilan Volkov. He also joins the Sitkovetsky Trio, with concert highlights including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Beethoven Triple Concerto with the Netherlands Philharmonic at the Wigmore Hall, London.

His highly-acclaimed and early recording of the Bach Cello Suites on Berlin Classics was a triumph. One critic describes him as a “reflective and highly intelligent young man”. Isang Enders is signed to Berlin Classics and SONY Music Entertainment and plays an instrument by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume (Paris, 1840).
